Slice of Life

I got my harness on. It was scratchy. I looked up and saw the biggest tree I have ever seen. The tree was huge. I couldn’t see the clear blue sky. There were ropes hanging from the low branches but not the high ones.

It was July 4th and it had been an hour since I had seen my mom and dad. I saw the basketball court on the left and and the large, still lake on the right. I saw the door open from the bus and it made a loud squeak. I got out of my seat and grabbed my bag. I walked up the row to get out of the bus and a big blast of hot air hit me as I walked out. I turned the corner and saw all the counselors all lined up in two lines to welcome us to camp. I walked down and high fived all the counselors who were in line. After that I came into the gymnasium. I had just realized how hot it was in the gymnasium but I shook the feeling off. I started looking for my friends from last year and my cousins and I found my friends. I said “hi” and told them to be good to their counselors because I wouldn’t be in their cabin because they were a year younger than me. I then found one of my cousins and we talked and departed. I started to feel hot and sticky and then my backpack felt like five pounds, then six pounds, every second. I heard the microphone go on and it said ” if you are in unit three go with David to the dance floor”. I followed David to the dance floor and at the dance floor we found out our cabin and I liked my cabin group a lot. My cabin number was thirty two.

Once we went to our cabin, we had to unpack and unpacking is not fun because it takes a long time. We then went to dinner which is normaly chicken. After dinner we went back to our cabins for a little bit and then we got chocolate chip cookies! The chocolate chips were warm and melted. Then we took showers, some showers hot and some showers cold, and went to bed.

The next day is where the real activities began. Some of the activities are tubing, blob (the blob is a big pillow that you jump on), iceberg (the iceberg is a rock climbing wall that is on water), horseback, dodge ball. Some more activities are golf, instructional swim (Instructinal swim is where the life guards tell us what to do in the water), arts and crafts and lots more. My favorite activity is everything.

One of the things we do in our unit  is we get to go on a trip and the trip was to a water park. I love water parks but that water park was small. I got to go tubing down the Chattahoochee first, and after we got lunch and a small icee. The icee was great! After, we went on the two waterslides they had and one was an open waterslide and you rode on a mat. You didn’t have to go on a mat though but there were two slides so you could race. The second one was open and you had t0 go on a tube. There was again two slides so you could race. My favorite one was with the mat and I thought it was lots of fun going to the water park.

Another thing we got to do was go tree climbing with a harness on. Before we climbed we had to learn a safety knot so we didn’t fall to the ground. The hard part was that you didn’t just say “up” and you went up, we had to pull ourselves up. It was still lots of fun and I even got to hang upside down. First, before I climbed I went though my procedures. First put leg through loop and second pull myself up. Next I move my magic knot up and finally I sit back down and rest. I continued up the tree until I reached the end of my rope and then I came back down and got a cup of water. I then got harnessed back up and I went up a new rope and I tried to go up as fast as I could up the rope so I could reach the top. I made it about half way up when it was time to go so we had to leave.

After three weeks we packed up our stuff and headed for the bus. I didn’t want to leave. On the bus I sat in the front. When I got off the bus my parents and brother were so glad to see me. I missed them and they missed me too,but I still had a great time at camp. I love going to camp.

  3. That sounds like so much fun!!You are a really good writer. What did tree climbing feel? What camp do you go to? You sound like it was the best time of your life. What is your favorite part about going to camp.

  4. Benjamen,

I could tell that you had a fun time at camp. I can tell because you put a lot of good detail in your slice of life on the things you did at camp. You put a lot of detail and juicy words in it that made it like good meat.
