Response to Literature

17 05 2012

For this response to literature I will be exploring a character in this book. The character I chose is Tree-ear because he has lots of personalities. Tree-ear is a very humble person, you can see that because he is always bowing and helping. He is also very good in a situation. Like when the fox came and Tree-ear hid until the fox was gone. He is a very smart boy too, when the robbers threatened him he didn’t do anything to get on their nerves. Tree- ear is a great person at heat and he will grow up to well-liked by anyone he meets and will enjoy his life for being what it is. If you have anything to further comment on please do!

This I Believe…

16 05 2012

I believe in helping the needy. A couple months ago I went to a fundraiser for a women’s shelter called Gilgal, they were attempting to raise money to renovate the shelter and pay for room décor. This was the second time I had been asked to do this fundraiser for Gilgal and they had asked me to sing. I always like helping out and getting to sing in public. My babysitter was hosting the event, she loves helping out and doing things for other people, and she went all out with this fundraiser. She was asking friends, family, and just random people whose voices were amazing to sing at the event. I was asked to sing there, I chose the song The Climb by Miley Cyrus because I felt that it would touch these women’s hearts and teach them that things can get better and to never give up. I rehearsed, memorized the song, and I was ready to sing this song.

When I got to the coffee shop where it was going to be held I started thinking of all the things I am grateful for, like a house, a bed, food, water, pets, friends, and all of my family, but when you look at these people you can see that they are grateful for everything that they have, which is very little, and you see the pain in their eyes go away with a bright and happy smile to replace it when they see all the people that have come for them to this event. My favorite song was the Java Boy, which my babysitter sang, and she is a great singer. She usually acts and sings on a daily basis at fundraisers and she finally got her chance to host her own fundraiser for a great cause, which she was very excited about. I hope that I can do something like that again, or even host an event like that just like my babysitter because now I know that I can make a difference in somebodies life and I feel like helping the needy is a way to give back, so if you take the time out of your daily life to do something for someone in need you are making a difference, this I believe.

A Single Shard

9 05 2012

For this Response to Literature I am doing a prediction.

I think that when the royal emissary gets to see Kang’s piece they will not like the new style that Kang was trying to do. The older men in the group will prefer Min’s work over Kang’s and will give Min the offer to work in the royal commission. I think that Kang will still appreciate the great tips from the royal emissary and will keep trying. I cannot wait to read the rest of the book and find out more about Tree-ear, Crane-man, Min, and Kang. There are so many decisions that they will face and I wonder how they will choose and solve problems. All the answers will come in the chapters ahead.

6th Grade Macs

8 05 2012

I like getting Macs next year for a couple reasons. Unlike PC it will be fast and efficient, and we get to have a computer that’s very useful. We also we get to customize our computer to our benefit. Macs will  also help us get homework done on our computer. Last, I am excited to learn new things about Macs since I have one at home. I would love to get a Mac next year because they are my favorite.

Title: How Did Greek Economic Crisis Get So Bad?

This is a current event blog post on the economic crisis in Greece.

Source: http://abcnews.go.com/WN/greeks-streets-violent-protests-economic-problems/story?id=10567233#.T4yZlY7cGTg

Who:Greek protesters

What: Protesters are jamming the streets

Where: In Athens, Greece

When: Now

Why do we care: A lot of people in America are having these same issues. People in Greece are upset with all the taxes and how expensive they are, they are setting fires and putting bombs in banks. The people here are also angered by the high taxes, it might give some people the idea to do what Greece is doing and protest, though things shouldn’t get so bad here, this is a crisis and it has to be dealt with.

Photo Journalism

12 04 2012

This is a picture of two baby elephants that are being protected from the cold and rain, they have raincoats because the keepers are afraid that the elephants might get pneumonia. In Kenya there are so many good people that help helpless animals that would suffer if we weren’t there to help them. It made me feel grateful that humans are helping animals like Shukuru (the elephant with the rain coat) who are trying to survive in this scary world. When the photographer took this picture he was probably thinking of what we can accomplish when we are dedicated to something as small as elephants. These people at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Nairobi Elephant Nursery are really making a difference in the lives of these elephants.

e Readers vs. Books

11 04 2012

e Readers are becoming more popular and people are not buying books as much as they used to. I think e Readers are greener than books because we are not cutting down trees and they still have as many books as libraries. While libraries only have a handful of books to choose from, e Readers have a variety of everything and there are options for everyone. They are just another improved technology that people use every day for personal enjoyment, including me! Books are starting to back off making room for e Readers, but some people might disagree. Not everyone can afford e Readers, so some people may stay at libraries. But for all the books you get on an e Reader it can pay for the e Readers themselves because the books on e Readers are sometimes less expensive than books in libraries. Books also keep librarians in business. Libraries are also a good place to find information. But, e Readers can also have books that are useful, like the dictionary, an encyclopedia, or even an atlas. While I still like e Readers more, I can see why people might choose books over e Readers.

Values

1 03 2012

In Values this morning the whole 5th grade pretended to be employees to demonstrate teamwork. We all got into teams and had 3 minutes to plan, then we started working to try to make parcoes (in 3 minutes) and we got 5 periods to work and 5 periods to plan and get supplies (alternating through work planning). A parcoe is a 3 inch by 5 inch sheet of paper that has a 1 inch by 1 inch red square paper clipped to the  right top corner and on the left side the last 1 inch of the paper was colored blue (it was a lot to do in 3 minutes). Then, after we had finished a parcoe we had to get it approved by the “bank” (our teachers). They were very critical and would send it back if even there was a little mistake. If we got it approved then we could trade it in for supplies or we could deposit it, the supplies usually cost more than 1 parcoe. Then it was a race against time and we all had to try to get a couple done in 3 minutes. The teammates that I had were Jordan, Thomas, Will T., Meg, and myself. Our team’s strategy was to have an assembly line and have each person doing something different. Some of our measurements were a little off and we had to scrap them, in the end we got 3 (almost 4) parcoes done. I think that our team did OK but we could have done better. The game was a great idea and made me think about all the teamwork possibilities that I could cross over in life. It was a great life lesson and I am glad that I got to have that experience. It was a very fun Values class and I hope we might get to do that again some other day! Thanks for reading my blog, leave a comment!

Title: Asteroid Threat in 2040?

Source: http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/asteroid-threat-2011-ag5-close-earth-2040-scientists/story?id=15809386#.T06DuXIXW1s

Who: An asteroid

What: An asteroid (aka AG5)

When: In 2040

Where:In space and maybe on earth

Why do we care? : Well, asteroids are very dangerous they can also have the power to kill many people, especially when it is 450 feet wide like this one. The problem is that we have only watched it for half an orbit which is not enough to tell where it will go, we only have an idea.
