MacBook Airs

One of the reasons I feel really good about Trinity 6th grade is because we are getting new Mac’s next year. I believe it will give us new opportunities to explore the internet and our computer in different ways. We will be able to toy with iMovie and iPhoto.I cant wait to learn the many unique controls to learn with the new computers. I will have to work on researching and finding credible resources. I think we will have a lot of fun learning about all of the great things about the Mac’s. I am sure next year will be a great one!!

Op/Ed piece

I think Disney is the best theme park for a lot of different reasons . Disney was immediately a big hit in 1955 because it showed insight into the old west, a wild rainforest, a medieval paradise, and the world of tomorrow. Disney was bustling with happy customers and people from all over the world. Disney also hired employees from different parts of the world to tell about their culture. This attracted even more visitors when people realized that this part of Disney has educational value. So Disney elaborated on this new quality, making a theme park called Epcot, Epcot had two parts, central Epcot and World showcase, World showcase showed everyone a part of the countries all over the world by using the same architecture and food as the civilization they were trying to copy. Disney now attracted school groups, students, teachers, professors, and parents. With this money, Disney expanded; it kept on making new attractions and rides. Other Theme parks tried to copy Disney but all failed. Disney will always be one of a kind.

The Theme

At the beginning of every school year at Trinity School Atlanta, GA the Sixth Graders come up with an inspiring theme for the school to help shape and build on the student’s moral list of values. For the past couple years the Sixth Graders have come up with great actions. Last year their theme was integrity. Integrity means to be honest in everything you do, even when people aren’t watching you.  As you can see, all of these themes are very strong and descriptive.

After sessions of long and hard thinking the Sixth Graders came up with a great theme, Determination! In their first assembly the Sixth Graders think of a fun and memorable way to announce the theme. Usually they put together skits to teach the school how to use the theme properly.

All throughout the school people have been using the theme in all of their activities . Also teachers have been bringing the theme up in all of their classes like P.E, Music, Art, and Language Arts. These are some comments on when the teachers bring the theme up and how well the students use it. The students interviewed Brian Balocki, a P.E coach at Trinity School and this is what he thought about his class and the students. “I can only talk about my class and how much I bring the theme up in my P.E and Values classes.” Admitted Brian. “Also in all of our units we do in P.E class I refer back to the school theme and discus determination.”

We know that teachers bring the theme up in their classes but we still don’t know if the students reflect off of the actions from the theme for the first month or the whole school year. The students at Trinity School went around for the second time but this time they went and asked if the students really remember the theme and if the hold onto it for the whole school year. A third and fifth grade science teacher Susan Edwards said that some students remember the theme throughout the school year. She also thought that most remember it at the beginning of the school year and then has forgotten about it completely. But Miss Gangarosa, an ELD music teacher disagrees; she thinks that everybody remembers the school theme throughout the whole school year every year.

After a long day of interviewing the students asked their final question, does the school theme fit the school? Mrs. McIntosh, a Trinity School Third Grade teacher says “Determination is very important and that you have to keep it in your mind in your everyday activities.” To the school, the theme is very inspiring and important in everything the teachers and students do. They make the theme so all of the people in the school have something to remember and add to their list of moral values.

Values – 3/1/12

For Values yesterday, we did an exercise called PARCOES, we had to make these cards with a red square and a blue side. The team that had the most approved PARCOES deposited in the bank won. We could also use our PARCOES to buy more supplies, for example: 1 PARCOE = 1 ruler. We also had a set of standards that the “bankers” (teachers) had to evaluate.

Homeless Bird

Homeless Bird (By: Gloria Whelan) Is about a girl named Koly who’s family lives in India and are poor. Since her parents want the best for her, they try and find her a husband but when they do they almost have to spend all of their money on the dowry or the gift to the husband and has to move in. Koly has physical and mental decisions to make, for example: “should I run away or should I stay and undergo Sass’s scoldings”.

Koly is very good at adapting to her surroundings but she still “wallows” in the past for example: For an amount of time, she had to live in a doorstep in Vrindavan, while there she was only fed a handful of sticky rice. She wanted to be with her parents but she knew it was against their culture. What Koly doesn’t realize is that she is a young girl with a future ahead of her she can stitch very well, therefore she can get a job somewhere. perhaps she could get married again. Overall I think that Koly has done a pretty good job with her situation.

A recurring theme that I have recognized is the theme of depression, think about it, wouldn’t you feel bad for yourself if you were a widow, you were broke, and you had no family to go to. That is how Koly was feeling for most of the time in this book. She felt that she was not independent nor confident. I did not think that her situation was going to get any better, but I was wrong, when she meets Raji, she starts to teach him how to read. Then Raji proposes  to Koly, she hesitates but then takes the offer with glee.

I think that Gloria Whelan did a great job comparing Koly to the homeless bird, flying from one home to another. never settling anywhere. I like how the author gave all the little things meaning, for example: the kingfisher and the bandicoot. They all had a part in the story, both of those animals were influential to Koly to make the right decisions. They were also creatures that she could relate to. Gloria whelan has done a great job with this book by using metaphors, freindships, and theme.

The Breadbasket

Last monday I went to Colombus, Georgia to stay with my Memama (grandmother) and I went with her to a little place called the Breadbasket, it is where you help less fortunate people pick out there food. We had about 200 people there, so the demand was pretty big, we had some canned fruits and veggies, soup, microwavable dinners, juice, hot choclate, corn bread mix, salad, marshmellows, and turkey for all 200 people! I got to help with unpacking, stacking, driving and loading peoples carts, and I got to work with the inmates. Overall, I had a great time helping people out.

Slice of Life

As I walked in to give my grandma the roses I bought from Costco, I was greeted by all of my relatives. When I saw Grandma, she was getting her shiny utensils out of the dishwasher and setting them on the table for dinner. When she saw me she came and gave me a hug. She loved the roses and put them in a glass vase.

It was a icy Fall morning. You could hear the wheels of my mom’s Town and Country on the interstate. We saw the sign that read “Welcome to Jackson, Tennessee.”. A few minutes later we hit My grandmothers Street. I went in her house with her roses and then I saw all of my family. My big cousin, Ryan was holding my new born baby cousin, Harrison. Grandma was leaning on the table fixing the silverware. My grandma’s house had a flower wallpaper and a lot of cookbooks and old metals that she hanged on the wall. She was so happy to see me and she loved the roses I brought her.

The next day, we celebrated my grandmothers birthday. She had a beautiful cake that was white with yellow icing and butterflies. While she celebrated her birthday. All of my cousins and I helped my mom and my aunts make the watermelon basket (a carved watermelon shaped like a basket) filled with fruit, I got to cut up the fruit that that we put in the basket. At the end it looked great! Before we could eat we had to greet all the party guest, I didn’t really like it but it was for my grandmother, so I could tolerate it. When they all came in we got to eat, my mom made some of her Irish mash potatoes and they tasted chunky.

When it was time to go I could not believe the day was already over. We went to the hotel and my mom had a little trouble checking in but we resolved it. We ended up going to bed at 11:30. The next day we got ready to leave, I was so sad I was not going to get to see my Grandmother until Thanksgiving. I will always remember the time I celebrated my grandmothers birthday.

Halloween

Every Halloween I have so much fun. I love dressing up in costumes and trick or treating. This year I dressed up as a evil warlock. Some people didn’t recogniz me, since I had a hood that went over my face, when I go trick or treating, I love to see everyone elses costume. Some are scary, some are crazy, and some are even inflatable. Please tell me what you dressed up as for Halloween and what was your favorite part. Thanks for reading

Gilgamesh

Gilgamesh [also known as Ballgames] was known as a great king for the first Ancient Mesopotamian city, Uruk. Gilgamesh was famous for ordering his subjects to build a giant wall to surround Uruk. There was also a story carved into stone called the Epic Of Gilgamesh.

Gilgamesh may or may not have been a real person and is described as a ten-foot, half man, and half god. Even though Gilgamesh could not be any of these things, there is still a good argument that he still could have been a real person. For example: there is a huge wall surrounding Uruk, there  was a mask found near Uruk that scientists believe to represent Gilgamesh. The Epic of Gilgamesh, along with fishing, boxing, wrestling, singing, dancing and playing songs, were all forms of entertainment to ancient Mesopotamians .

Gilgamesh was said to be a very cruel king at first and told all of his men to leave their families and not sleep for days to build the wall for Uruk. He got his wish, to always be remembered, for making his people work until they died of exhaustion. Until Gilgamesh met Enikdu, a wild half human, half animal. When Gilgamesh finally met a man of his own strength, they became friends. He stopped abusing his subjects because he was less lonely. I think that the Epic of Gilgamesh teaches a lot of values like: Enikdu confronted Gilgamesh and showed a lot of courage by doing so. They worked together and slayed a lot of monsters, the most famous ones they fought were Humbaba and The Bull of Heaven. I personally love The Epic of Gilgamesh and think that it is a very well written story even though it was written a few thousand years ago.

Acrostic poem

How fun it is

At Halloween

Lets all dance a scary monster dance

Let’s all celebrate for the dead has awakened

When ghost and ghouls come out to play, bad things will come

Evil will rise tonight

Enter but you may never comeback

Now are you scared?!?
