hey Mrs Berry! I like the blog post, I too used to be very cautious with my pencils for no apparent reason along with my notebook well actually I still am with the notebooks but I am trying to get past the fact that just because you make a mistake on a paper or for me on a drawing it doesnt mean you have to freak out about it. :)

This is a wonderful blog to read just before Monday morning carpool. Thank you for the wonderful connection between the delicious cup of hot, steaming, delectable coffee and the the children we have the joy of being with each day. Inspirations sometimes come from the most surprising places!

Time in the Sun and Ms Pile's response are both beautifully stated. Without joy, learning can be a trial instead of a triumph. The sun can bring light to those days and those hearts that need not more busyness but more brilliance.

Thanks to both of you for reminding us all: it is not the clock and the schedule and the calendar but the heart and the soul and the mind that lead to peace and love and joy.

Oh, how I love this reflection and even more that you took the time you did to do nothing but relax, dream, reflect, enjoy and simply be. I'll be holding you to those last sentences as we begin our partners in crime role next year. It is so essential, in the lives filled with so many good things and myriad choices, to make time to be alone with ourselves, to truly learn the art of reflection. The joy, contentment and renewal I hear in this piece is what childre also communicate when given the time to do the same. Far from wasting time, it is precious time gained...kairos time...time not by the hands of a clock...life giving time.

As a math teacher, I don't always catch the spelling errors, but I do see this quite a bit - price 0.99c (what happened to the cent sign on the keyboard? replaced by @?) Anyway, 0.99c is 99/100 of a cent - less than a penny! I always want to go in, buy 10 of whatever they are selling for that price, throw 'em a dime, and say "Keep the change." It's a great lesson that I always share with our students.

I also really appreciate this post. I think the fact that you let your students choose their activity is a great follow-up to Alfie Kohn. Giving them the freedom to choose lets them feel like they're in control of thier own learning.

I love this post Maryellen. It is important to remember not to wallow in mistakes we have made, but to learn something positive from them and be able to move on without guilt. What a great lesson to teach your students.

I've always thought that the clear simple voice of a single child contains all the beauty one ever needs. Then, when many of those young voices are in harmony with each other, it is a real symphony of emotion and joy and even grace. I love your description, and am not surprised that being in church led to inspiration of many kinds.
