A Single Shard

Published by under Uncategorized

I think that what is happening right now in A Single Shard is interesting. I don’t fully understand what Kang did, but I wonder why Kim didn’t commend him. He may have had some things wrong with his vessel but if was a totally new idea that even Tree-ear thought was beautiful then I think it deserves some attention. I wonder what would happen if Kim might give both Kang and Min commissions. Would they work together, or would they work alone? In my opinion, they would work alone. If Min does get a commission will he try Kang’s new technique, or would he need help from Kang? If Min did do it would he be able to do it better than Kang? I think that Min might have an idea about Kang’s technique, but he probably wouldn’t know exactly how to do it because Kang didn’t tell anyone. I also wonder who they are trying to work for. Is it the emperor of China, or someone from Korea?

MacBook Airs

Published by under Uncategorized

I think that getting a MacBook Air will have some ups. First, right now Trinity School does not have a very good network. The Internet is slow if there are too many people online at once. Sometimes a page will not load at all. The MacBook Airs will improve the network at school. Next, there are many little tricks that you can do with them. There are lots of different finger swipes that you can use to do different things. There are different settings that you can change to make your computer better.     There will also be some downs to having MacBook Airs. First, they sometimes can be very slow. Sometimes the internet can crash even if you didn’t do anything wrong. Next, they can be annoying and you can do things you don’t mean to do. You might accidentally click with the wrong amount of fingers and do the wrong thing. Basically, I think that having a MacBook Air will be good but mainly bad.

Photo-Journalism

Published by under Uncategorized

This picture shows a small pool reflecting the sky in white pocket on the Paria Plateau. The water from the ground has washed the color out of the rock and the weather has cracked the rock into different shapes. The article is about the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. I think it is interesting because the cliffs are very cool to look at and I enjoy geology. I think that this picture tells a story a thousand-year story. Click here to view the image.

Kid’s Rights

Published by under Uncategorized

Children’s rights are limited in many ways. First, children do not have freedom of speech. A kid can still question an adult, or ‘talk back’, politely and respectfully. For example, if a kid said, “excuse me ma’am, but I don’t think it is fair that fair that I have to be sent to the corner if I didn’t do anything” they would get in even more trouble for talking back, even though they were being polite. A child cannot be an advocate for themselves without getting in trouble for being disrespectful even though they legally have freedom of speech. Next, students do not have the right to modify their education to their preference. If they are in a class with people they cannot work with they have to deal with it. They cannot do anything about it. In conclusion, there are many rights kids do not have that they should.

I can see why some people might not want kids to have these rights. First, children might abuse their rights. On the other hand, if an adult checks in and makes sure they are not abusing their rights it will be fine. Next, a kid might hurt an adult’s feelings by talking back. Nevertheless, if the kid uses polite words the adult will not feel disrespected. Overall, there are many reasons why kid’s rights should change.

Parcoes

Published by under Uncategorized

Today the Trinity fifth graders did a cooperative working activity in values. We were divided into twelve groups, or companies, and were instructed to pick a team CEO, a team name, and a salesperson. Our team name was Parcalogical We then had five three-minute working periods and five three-minute planning periods to make Parcoes. Parcoes are 3 by five inch pieces of paper with a blue 1 inch wide blue band on the left side and a 1 by 1 inch square of colored-red paper clipped onto the top right corner. The team with the most Parcoes in the bank at the end of the activity won. It was the salesperson’s job to bring Parcoes to the bank.  We had to get the Parcoes checked by the teachers before we could deposit them in the bank. We could also trade Parcoes in for more supplies. I think this activity was helpful and taught us how to work together better. My group got only one done. I think this was because we were rushing and not getting Parcoes done correctly, and then wasting our time getting them checked. Some groups did better than us because they did not rush.

Campbell Stone

Published by under Uncategorized

The Trinity fifth graders have gone to Campbell Stone twice so far this year. Campbell Stone is a retirement home in Atlanta. When we went there, each base group was paired with a buddy. Our buddy was very interesting. She was a cheerleader, and she used to babysit. She loves to play BINGO, and she plays it as much as she can. When she moved to Campbell Stone, the only apartment that was available was on the eleventh floor. When another apartment became available, her son offered to get it for her. She declined because she liked the view of the sunset she from her window, and she could see Stone Mountain. Our buddy was a very fun person to meet.

Homeless bird

Published by under Uncategorized

Some bird images from Homeless Bird are the homeless bird from Tagore’s poem book and the birds Koly saw in the cages at the marketplace. These birds and Koly are alike in some ways. Koly is stuck in a cage for a very long time and is only being used, like the birds from the marketplace. Koly is also homeless like the bird from the poem, searching for a place to belong. Overall, I think that a bird is a very good thing to use as a simile or a metaphor in this book.

Steve Jobs

Published by under Uncategorized

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/10/05/scitech/main20116338.shtml

Steve Jobs Died on October 5th, 2011. The article above is about his life and death. It talks about his pancreatic cancer, something he had had for many years. It complements him on creating and improving three fields, the personal computer, the ipod, and the iphone. “Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor” says an Apple company statement.

This event is important because we would probaply not have personal computers  if it weren’t for Jobs. I think his death will have a great impact on Apple, America, and the world. I love Apple and its products, so his death will have a large impact on me, as well. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family, and his memory will hopefully last forever.
